Scrappy Love Birds in a Nest

March 15, 2010 |

This project cost me a measly $4 - and all the supplies came from the Dollar Tree!  Aren't these little guys so sweet?

To make these scrappy birds and their nest you will need:
  • Basket without handles - mine was 9" in diameter ($1)
  • 2 ceramic birds ($2)
  • 1 bag of Spanish moss ($1)
  • Hot glue gun (On hand!)
  • Elmer's glue (On hand!)
  • Scrap fabric (On hand!)

The instructions are super easy:
  1. Use the hot glue gun to secure the moss to the basket.  I just glued moss all over the inside of the basket and around the outside edges.  I left the bottom free so it would stand straight.
  2. I ripped up strips of scrap fabric.  I ripped the fabric because I wanted the edges to be a little frayed and distressed.  My strips were about 1" wide by 12" long.
  3. Using Elmer's glue, I wrapped and glued the strips of fabric around the ceramic birds until they were completely covered.  The Elmer's glue has a ModgePodge-y effect, but you could use hot glue.
Aren't they kind of Anthropologie-esque?  I thought it was kind of a ho hum idea until I put it all together at the end, and I really love how it turned out!  The fabric you use can really change the feel of this - I think these would be cute in muslin or linen, or even burlap for that matter!  You could also cover them in tissue paper or newspaper... wow, so many possibilities!

Love the idea of covering the basket in moss. I too have grabbed bags and bags of theat moss at the dollar store, and have one of those little birds. Everything looks adorable together!

I love this idea, the basket is a great idea. They do remind me of some pricey "birdies" I've seen from places like Anthropologie lately...cute!!
